T's Are In!

For those of you that ordered them - and for those that didn't we have extra! $25 Get some!

Growing Pains, Announcements, Change Etc

All -

Just wanted to take a couple minutes to address a some things with you guys. First, we knew that when we came to a new space it would be a big change and change is not always easy. Some people were bound to be really pumped, others not so much, and others somewhat indifferent. We felt that there were too many positives and possibilities tied into the new location to pass it up both for the businesses involved as well as our clients. So please know that we have moved to the new space in order to bring the best facility and the highest level of service to all of you - that is our first priority.

We are aware that mat space has been a bit of an issue, running two classes at one time etc. Regarding this, Grace Sensei has moved the Judo class to 4:30PM so they will be done with their class when BJJ starts effective as of yesterday. For now, Marc will continue to run Muay Thai at the same time as BJJ so we will be sharing the mats during the regular evening classes. At present the Muay Thai folks often outnumber the BJJ folks and generally require more mat space person for person. So, we are trying to work with the mat space that the class requires. If 10 more people show up for BJJ any given night, then obviously we would command more mat space. However, please know that this is your gym and your mat ! We are SHARING. All of you guys are a valued part of the gym and your input and general happiness is always important to us.

Also, in an effort to unify, simplify etc. Front Range BJJ will be taking on the Factory X nameto become Factory X BJJ. We have been considering this for a couple months and it just makes the most sense. We hope there will be less confusion for the clients, and additionally we can streamline the websites. Also, when FX wins in the MMA/Muay Thai arena, the BJJ program can benefit from that exposure.

Finally, the last change to the schedule will be to move Open Mat on Friday's to 4PM. At 5:30, the fighters spar and it's not safe to have other folks on the mat. So if you'd like to get some BJJ training in, you can have the mat to yourselves until 5:30.

Again, we appreciate your consideration and understanding. We are doing our very best to settle into the new space, make a great gym for you guys and adjust and adapt.

See you on the mat!

Guys, we will be doing some training at 4PM tonight Friday. I think we are going to need to move the 6PM Open Mat as the fighters have sparring and the mat and the cage are very full at that time. Will advise for next week. So if you'd like to come down at 4PM tonight let's go!

Moving Day

Remember guys we are moving this Saturday and Sunday at 10AM. Please come and help anytime if you are able. Classes will begin in the new space Tuesday June 28th.

The new address pictured above is:
4731 S. Santa Fe Cir. #1
Englewood, CO 80110

There is no northbound left hand turn into the complex. If you are going north on Santa Fe you need to flip a u-turn at Union and then take a right into the complex. Or you can take a left on Union then left on Wyandott and take the dirt road around the back to the complex.

See you there and thank you so much for your support during this transitional period. It's gonna be awesome!

Drysdale Seminar

The Seminar with Robert Drysdale was awesome! It is truly inspiring to be in the same room with certain people and I found Professor Drysdale to be one of those people. This week we will be going over the techniques we learned in intermediate class so don't miss it...you already missed a huge opportunity in attending the seminar.

Here is the first of a 3 part documentary on Robert just for fun. You'll find the other two parts on youtube.

Don't forget the Robert Drysdale Seminar this Sunday!

Don't miss the opportunity to come and learn from one of the best Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world! We are meeting at 12 noon at the academy if anyone wants to carpool.

Here is a cool crosspost from RDA...

The Meaning of “Discover Who You Are”

Our friend Mike Torres transcribed the last answer I gave in the recent Fightworks Podcast interview for his own notebook, and send me a copy too. The question was the meaning of “Discover Who You Are”.

Essentially I’ve discovered that if you chip away at something, not only will you become more skilled at it but it will transform you. Jiu-jitsu is one of those rare life disciplines that can be interesting for decades… and it can stay with you in different periods of your life. So you start as a teenager, you’re at one mental space. You continue through college and your 20s… You get married, you have kids, you’re in your 30s. You know, the gym may get boring for you. You may enjoy rock climbing for a few years, you may enjoy mountain biking for a few years. You may enjoy those disciplines for an entire life. I feel that BJJ, or jiu-jitsu in general, is a dynamic form of yoga. I did not come up with that, that was Matt Thornton I originally heard that from. But I really feel it’s true. It takes you and puts you in a situation where you’re working with and against your evolutionary instincts to not be dominated.

It brings you to one pointed concentration while you are moving around on the mat and there’s something very cleansing about that, and there’s something that is kind of primal about that. And we’re able to funnel it through the techniques of jiu-jitsu; we’re able to actually transform these evolutionary instincts that we have to fight or flee. And be able to create something very rich and very complex; essentially a physical language where we can communicate with each other without exchanging words. You really can tell a person’s personality when you roll with them. So jiu-jitsu is a lifetime art [as Saulo said in the video]. And once you’re able to get on the escalator, you stick with it, you discover things about yourself.

I am much more skilled than I ever imagined I would be. Now that’s not to say that I’m the most skilled. There are plenty of guys that are way tougher but if you just stick with it. You think as a white belt, “Man, if I could only get my blue belt” then “If I could just get my purple.” And eventually you’re a black belt and you’re like “Man there’s so much more to learn”. It’s so much different. You definitely realize the high end and the low end and you discover your own limitations. And you learn to accept them. It’s OK. You know? You beat someone in a match, that’s great. You lose to someone in a match and you’re like, “Heh, that guys better”. And once you’re honest… once you’re honest with yourself, it just takes you down and squares you. There’s a certain truth and reality that the mat brings out in you that allows you to sit a little bit more comfortably in your own skin and in your own soul.

So that is “Discover Who You Are”.

Allow the discipline to transform you. A lot of people end up serving the discipline; they get injured, they give up their wife, they give up their job to chase the discipline. The discipline should enhance your life, you should never serve the discipline. And sometimes you lose perspective on that. I have certainly stepped over that line where I’ve lost perspective and overtrained. “Oh, this means so much.” Where you’re crushed after a loss, you’re elated after a victory. Hey man these are just markers, they’re milestones on your own journey. No one else is watching. It’s your own trip. Enjoy it. Craft your journey carefully and you will discover who you are.

CFL, Front Range BJJ & Factory X are moving!

Ok, it's official - we know you may have heard the stirrings. We are moving effective June 1st. Suffice it to say the new space is an upgrade. We will be under a unified 10,500 sq. ft. along with FactoryX and Performance MMA (Troy and Kelly). Gracie Judo will also be moving along with us. The CrossFit gym is getting bigger with more usable space - the mat space is getting bigger with more usable space. There will be a full cage in place and Troy and Kelly will have their wherehouse there along with a retail store front for all of your purchasing needs. There is a separate office, men's and women's bathrooms that are being redone and 2 new showers are being installed. A huge parking lot on the south side of the building is all ours and we are adjacent to the bike path along the Platte. There is a private office and room for a lounge and big screen TV up front as well.

Not only is it an upgrade in terms of the facility but it's also an upgrade in terms of it's centralized location. Basically it's Santa Fe and Union (if you don't know where that is think Santa Fe and Bellview). It's about 12 minutes from our existing location.

This is very exciting for everyone involved. Marc, Jarah, Troy and Kelly, Myself and Kyle have worked very hard on this over the last couple months. We hope all of you will be equally as excited to move to a location that will represent probably the most unique and awesome facility on all of the Front Range! You guys deserve it! A huge thanks to all of our clients for all that you do!

Here is a map of the new location. It is literally on the border of Englewood and Littleton.

Shows to Watch

First some of you guys may have seen/met Lew Polley around the gym. Lew has been training/teaching at Factory X and doing some training over on our side at the gym. Suffice it to say that he is the caliber of athlete that lands a spot as the assistant coach on this season of the Ultimate Fighter. So....tune in on Wednesday nights on Spike at 7PM and check him out!

Also, aside from being an all around nice guy, I have deduced that Lew is a twitter fiend. So show him some support and follow him @lewpolley

Also, Marc has been doing some training sessions with Joe Warren, the current Bellator Featherweight Champ. Tune in and watch him defend his title this Saturday the 16th on MTV 2. More info. here.

Kevin's Gi Win Fight to Win 2/2011 from CrossFit Littleton/FrontRangeBJJ on Vimeo.

Here is a video of Kevin's first ever BJJ match in the Gi. Great job Kevin! Click the username below the video to see the rest of the footage...

Tournament Results

Everyone did really well at the Fight to Win tournament this last Saturday. Kevin had an awesome debut winning his first match 11-0 and losing his second on points. John fought well also landing a sick double leg in his third match. He won a no gi match completely dominating on points, lost a no gi match by guillotine (always watch the guillotine guys! This is always the first thing people slap on!) and then won a gi match on points as well. Lastly, Alan swept his division winning the gold, 2 matches by submission and one 12-0 or something like that.

We could not be more pleased with you guys, great work!

Visting the Roy Dean Academy

Just got back from training in beautiful Bend, OR at Roy Sensei's academy. I was very well taken care of and got some good training in especially with the characters pictured above. Thanks so much to Roy & Rick for their hospitality and to all the new friends I made during my stay. And thanks to everyone I got a chance to train with at the academy for the jiu-jitsu lessons! Coach Andres and I will be returning this spring/summer to continue our BJJ quest...

Open Mat this Saturday

Coach Joaquin would like to have a good turnout this Saturday for Open Mat at 12:30 so the competitors can have one last really solid training session. Even if you can only come down for a 1/2 hour of rolling do your best to make it! Aside from the upcoming tourney, we'd like to get a solid regular group for this open mat slot...

Thanks again to all who came out for a great comp team training session. Great work! Alan, John and Kevin you guys showed a lot of heart. Nice work.

Brian & Adam Win Big!

Coach Andres with the Champ!

I wanted to send a huge congratulations to Brian Camozzi and Adam Stroup who both made their fighting debuts last night at Red and Jerry's. These guys represented themselves and Factory X, CFL and Front Range BJJ in true style bringing home 2 wins!

Brian fought Muay Thai winning by decision after three rounds and Adam won by guillotine submission in the first round. All that hard work paid off and we could not be happier for them or more proud.
